Prime Video's Vision for Asia-Pacific: Building an Entertainment Hub (2026)

Amazon's Prime Video is betting big on the Asia-Pacific region, and it's not just about streaming. The company's vice president for Asia-Pacific, Gaurav Gandhi, has outlined a vision for Prime Video as an 'entertainment hub' in the region, a one-stop platform that ties together its originals, partner channels, rentals, and add-on subscriptions. This strategy is a response to the industry's shift away from stand-alone apps towards aggregation and bundling, and it's particularly relevant in the diverse and crowded Asia-Pacific market.

Gandhi's 'hub' concept is a push for scale, both for customers and content partners. Customers get the 'widest selection' through one app and one billing relationship, while content partners gain distribution and a massive audience without having to build their own tech and payments stack. This is especially important in a region where the streaming business is maturing, and players of every size are pushing towards bundling and aggregation.

One of the key markets for Prime Video's strategy is India, where the company is folding a free, ad-supported tier into its paid service. This integration with Amazon MX Player positions Prime Video as India's largest streaming service for exclusive originals, combining its premium subscriber base with MX Player's free reach. This combination is being sold to creators and advertisers as scale that only Reliance's JioStar can realistically rival.

In Japan, Prime Video has also been building its subscription-streaming habit from scratch, establishing a new category of subscription video in a market still anchored to free-to-air television. The company has broadened across four content pillars: anime, scripted entertainment, unscripted programming, and live sports, including a live boxing business and a slate of manga adaptations.

Gandhi sees the Asia-Pacific region as central to Prime Video's global plans, not just as a key driver of growth, but as a market where new ideas are generated, such as India's tiered and mobile-first plans and its multilingual programming. These innovations could eventually be rolled out elsewhere, making the Asia-Pacific region a crucial testing ground for Prime Video's future.

However, there are challenges ahead. The crowded nature of the region's developed markets and the low-margin realities of the rest mean that Prime Video's strategy will need to be carefully tailored to each market. But with its focus on scale, innovation, and a 'hub' concept, Prime Video is well-positioned to succeed in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
