Our latest SwimSwam Pulse feature has revealed an intriguing insight into the swimming community's predictions for the upcoming year. Nearly 70% of voters have backed Rylee Erisman as the top stock among the reigning World Junior champions for 2026. But here's where it gets controversial...
Erisman, a young talent with two more years of junior eligibility, made waves last year. She dominated the World Junior Championships, setting records and earning a spot on the U.S. senior roster for the Pan Pacific Championships. Despite missing out on the World Championships, her performances in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles, as well as the backstroke events, were impressive.
The Versatile Erisman
In December, Erisman showcased her versatility, clocking impressive times in both the 200 and 500 freestyles. Her ability to excel across various distances is a rare talent, and it has many swimming enthusiasts excited about her potential.
However, Erisman isn't the only junior making a splash. British breaststroker Filip Nowacki also caught the eye of voters, picking up over 10% of the votes. Nowacki dominated the junior scene in 2025, winning gold in both the 100 and 200 breast at major championships. He finished the year ranked 3rd globally in the 200 breast, an impressive feat.
The Junior Record Breakers
And this is the part most people miss: despite Nowacki's success, he wasn't the fastest junior in the 200 breast. That title goes to Japan's Shin Ohashi, who set a new World Junior Record. Ohashi's absence from the World Juniors meant he wasn't included in our poll, but his achievement is worth noting.
Other notable mentions include Audrey Derivaux, a versatile American talent who won multiple World Junior golds, and John Shortt, an Irish backstroker who had a strong finish to the year.
The Road to Major Meets
One key factor working against Derivaux is her absence from the U.S. Pan Pac roster, which means she won't be competing in the biggest meet for U.S. swimmers in 2026. In contrast, Erisman has secured her spot, and Nowacki, Shortt, and others still have the opportunity to qualify for the European Championships.
