Attention, sports radio enthusiasts in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island! Get ready for a signal shift that might have you reaching for the dial.
If you're a devoted listener of WEEI, the beloved sports radio station, you'll soon need to tune into a different frequency to catch your favorite broadcasts in Rhode Island and the southeastern part of Massachusetts. Currently, WEEI is accessible via 103.7 FM in that region. However, a significant change is on the horizon as Audacy, the company that owns WEEI, has made a deal to sell off the 103.7 WVEI-FM Providence frequency. This news was confirmed by a company spokesperson this week.
But here's where it gets interesting: Ocean State Media, the organization behind The Public’s Radio and Rhode Island PBS, is stepping in to acquire the 103.7 FM frequency. This acquisition marks a substantial investment for Ocean State Media, which has historically utilized five different frequencies to serve listeners across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. With a reported $4.9 million investment, they're aiming to enhance the listening experience significantly.
Pam Johnston, the president and CEO of Ocean State Media, shared her excitement about this development. She stated that this move will allow listeners to enjoy a single, clear, high-quality broadcast without needing to switch channels as they travel within Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. This, she believes, will greatly improve their ability to deliver local news and information more effectively. The entire process, including the necessary approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is expected to take up to 90 days. Johnston also mentioned that the $4.9 million will be financed through the sale of their existing frequencies.
And this is the part most people miss: While these changes are unfolding, WEEI continues to face stiff competition. In the Nielsen Audio Ratings, it consistently trails behind its main rival, 98.5 The Sports Hub. Adding to the backdrop of these developments, Audacy, WEEI's parent company, underwent a significant financial restructuring, filing for bankruptcy in 2024 with nearly $2 billion in debt, before emerging as a private company later that year.
So, what are your thoughts on this radio frequency shuffle? Do you think consolidating to a single frequency will truly improve the listener experience, or are you concerned about losing access to your favorite station on the current dial? Let us know in the comments below!
